AWARD FOR DARA NIKNEJAD AT EUROPEAN NEUROSURGERY MEETING
Congratulations to Dara Niknejad, PhD student at the Urban lab and neurosurgical resident at University Hospitals Leuven. He won the 'Trainee Lecture' at the 2021 course of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies.
Dara Niknejad: "I have presented the results of our ongoing project at the Urban lab at NERF, where we study the relationship between neuronal activity and the subsequent hemodynamic activity, a mechanism known as neurovascular coupling. The sophisticated tools we use are both developed at imec and NERF: functional ultrasound imaging and the Neuropixels probe!"
The European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) promotes research and development in the field of neurosurgery.
Functional ultrasound imaging was presented as a promising tool for the treatment of patients with cerebrovascular pathology.
The jury unanimously awarded Niknejad the price for the soundness of the scientific project and acknowledged that functional ultrasound imaging carries a high potential for applications in the field of cerebrovascular surgery.
"After the success of functional ultrasound imaging for preclinical research, I’m delighted to see how this technology that we are developing at NERF with UZ Leuven may accompany the next generation of talented neurosurgeons such as Dr. Dara Niknejad and help them revolutionize the clinical practice and improve patient lives," adds Alan Urban.
The price includes a honorary visit at a neurosurgical department in Europe of choice for one week.
